I am a big fan of the Berlin Modernism Housing Estates, and one day I came across photos of a wonderful renovation project in Bruno Taut’s Horseshoe Estate in Berlin-Britz: Tautes Heim. Ben Buschfeld and Katrin Lesser had brought back the colours the rooms originally had. It was exactly the setting I wish for my objects: rooms in wonderful colours that make you wonder what stories have unfolded in them. So in October 2024 I spent a day there with the photographer Anne Deppe for a photo shoot with all five collections.

A house by Bruno Taut
Tautes Heim is a small end-of-terrace house in the Horseshoe Estate, which Bruno Taut built with Martin Wagner between 1925 and 1930. Since 2008 the estate has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Berlin Modernism Housing Estates”. The designer Ben Buschfeld and the landscape architect Katrin Lesser restored the house with so much love for detail: the original colours, researched from Taut’s palette, the door handles, lamps and floors, and the old tiled stoves. In 2013 the project received the Europa Nostra Award, the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage.

The colours
For me, the colours are what makes the house. The blue of the bedroom is amazing, but I also loved the kitchen. There is a small yellow room too, where in the end we didn’t photograph anything because it is so tiny. And the garden is beautiful – you can tell that Katrin Lesser is a landscape architect.

A day of arranging
My objects were only there for the shoot, and Anne Deppe and I had a lot of fun arranging them in the rooms: KNSTRKT castles on the table in the green room, VIIE VASES on the windowsill, a CANDY side table against the blue wall, FOLDWORK next to the tiled stove and JELLO in the kitchen. In the bathroom, KNSTRKT found a new job, which I wrote about in KNSTRKT in the Bathroom.

Stay at Tautes Heim
Tautes Heim is not a museum: you can rent the house and stay overnight, with room for up to four guests. If you are travelling to Berlin, I can only recommend it. A wonderful place – Bruno Taut would be proud of this renovation.
