ICH und DU: Matter of Course at Milan Design Week 2022

In 2021, eleven Berlin designers founded Matter of Course, a collective of independent female designers who each run their own studio. Since then, they have shown their work together in Milan, Paris and Berlin.

Their first show abroad was ICH und DU at 5VIE, Via Cesare Correnti 14, during Milan Design Week from 7 to 12 June 2022. It was curated by Anna Carnick and Wava Carpenter of Anava Projects and supported by Dr. Hauschka. The title comes from Martin Buber’s 1923 essay Ich und Du (I and Thou) and his line “All actual life is encounter.” The eleven designers showed objects in glass, wood, clay, textiles and metal in a series of small scenes about the self and others.

STUDIO BERG launched CANDY, glass objects with swirls like old-fashioned boiled sweets. The New York Times picked CANDY for its Milan Design Week report under “Eye Candy”, read more here.

Next to CANDY, STUDIO BERG showed two new objects: MERINGUE, stoneware boxes inspired by meringues, and LIQUORICE, baroque mirrors framed in stoneware coils that recall liquorice wheels.
